Duval County special ed test scores, graduate rate higher

Higher FAA reading and math results as well as an increase in ESE graduations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Recently released reading and math Florida Alternative Assessment as well as Exceptional Student Education graduation rates are showing an improvement for Duval County Public Schools' ESE program.  

Among the seven largest school districts in Florida, Duval has moved from fourth to second with a 3 percentage point increase over the last two years in the reading FAA.

For the FAA in math, the district has maintained second position, out of seven, with a 7 percentage point increase over the last two years.  

The FAA is taken by students who qualify for a special diploma based on their individualized education program. 

Duval County Public Schools has also increased the graduation rate for ESE students this year by 10 percentage points and narrowed the gap between the district and state average from 9 percentage points to only 2 points. They have also moved from fifth to third out of Florida's seven largest school districts.

Over the past two years, ESE students have seen a 17 percentage point increase and narrowed the gap between the district and the state by 10 percentage points. 

"I am extremely proud of the work that has been done in these area," said Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of Duval County schools. "While we have made strides in improving outcomes for our ESE students over the past two years, there is still much work to be done to perfect our support for ESE students."
