FHP: Driver charged with DUI after truck hits house

16-year-old girl in bedroom trapped under truck, suffers minor injuries

GLEN ST. MARY, Fla. – A 16-year-old Baker County girl was hurt early Tuesday morning when a truck crashed into her bedroom, trapping her leg underneath a tire.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of the truck, 31-year-old Brian Crawford (pictured below), was charged with DUI.

The girl, Ashlyn Stafford, and her younger stepsister were sleeping in their bedroom in their family's Odis Yarborough Road home when Crawford's Chevy Silverado came crashing through about 2:30 a.m. and stopped with Ashlyn's leg pinned under one of its tires. Her stepsister, sleeping just feet away, was not injured.

Ashlyn's family said her stepfather came rushing in and had to punch Crawford in the face to wake him up to get him to put the truck in reverse so they could get it off her leg. The family said Crawford is a family friend who has been at the house before for parties.

"My stepdad had to make him back up, and it took him like five minutes to back up, because he was just so out of it," Ashlyn said. "Finally, he got my leg out of it."

Ashlyn was taken to Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to the FHP report.

She was home Tuesday afternoon on crutches with a cast on her foot and said she has some strong opinions about what happened.

"I had a few bad words to say to him when I was underneath his tire," Ashlyn said. "I don't know. I don't have any respect for somebody who drinks and drives. Period."

The report said Crawford was driving westbound on Odis Yarborough Road in Glen St. Mary when he swerved to avoid an animal in the road and lost control of his truck.

The Silverado drove off the road, hitting a mailbox, a support cable to a power pole, a fence and then Ashlyn's house, according to the report.

The FHP report said Crawford failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. He later provided breath samples of 0.181 and 0.178. He was cited for an open container, not wearing a seat belt, careless driving, DUI and DUI property damage.
