2 arrested in Bradford County road rage incident

Deputies say drivers exchanged gunfire

STARKE, Fla. – Two men were arrested Tuesday following a road rage incident in the Prevatt Creek area where they exchanged gunfire, the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office said.

Guy Gould, 52, and Kevin Dezurik, 45, are charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

About 6:30 p.m., deputies received several calls regarding a shooting between a semi-truck and an SUV on U.S. 301.

A few minutes later, Starke police said they stopped the semi-truck at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Walnut Street and detained Dezurik.

Around the same time, Bradford deputies said they stopped the SUV on Southeast 144th Avenue, just east of U.S. 301 and detained Gould.

According to the Sheriff's Office report, Dezurik was driving north on U.S. 301 when Gould changed lanes in front of him and created some distance. When Dezurik caught up to Gould, he turned on his bright lights.

Dezurik told deputies he tried to pass Gould after he flashed a pistol out of the driver’s side window. While passing, Dezurik said he heard two shots fired. He then cut off Gould, causing him to go into the median, according to the report.

That's when Dezurik said that he pulled over, got out of his semi-truck and was going to hold Gould at gunpoint, but Gould backed up and went into the right lane to pass Dezurick’s semi-truck before he could do so, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Dezurick told deputies that Gould pulled out his gun again as he tried to pass and that’s when he fired two shots into the side of Gould’s SUV, and four more as he drove away, the report said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Gould told deputies that he suffers from PTSD, which causes him not to remember everything.

Statements from the people involved were consistent with the footage recorded on the semi-truck’s dashboard camera, investigators said.

Deputies said the SUV was shot multiple times and was impounded as evidence.

A tire from the semi-truck was recovered as potential evidence, and the semi-truck was released to its owner, deputies said.

There were no reported injuries in the incident. The passenger in Gould's SUV was unhurt and was not arrested in the incident.

Both men were arrested and taken to the Bradford County Jail.

How to prevent road rage incidents

News4Jax Crime and Safety Analyst Gil Smith said road rage incidents can be prevented.

He recommended that if you accidentally cut someone off, the best thing is to raise your hand and say, "Hey, it's my fault."

Smith said that's the quickest way to diffuse the situation. But if the situation continues to get worse, Smith offered some advice.

"The best thing to do is not go straight home because the person who is following you will know your address," he said.

Then, it's best to call 911, give dispatch your location and tell them you're in danger, Smith said. But he added that you should not stop your car and you should not exit your vehicle.

"You want to try to get away from them as safely as possible and not put yourself in a position where you are there with them for them to confront you," Smith said.
