Woman who pleaded guilty in DUI crash sentenced

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Middleburg woman who pleaded guilty to causing a crash that killed a passenger and another passenger's unborn baby last year will spend eight years in prison.

Alexandria Powers, 21, pleaded guilty earlier this month to two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of DUI serious bodily injury. Police said she was driving two of her friends home on Nov. 2, 2014, when she went off New Kings Road and slammed into some trees.

Chasity Taylor died in the wreck. She was in the back seat. 

Paige Hampton, 23, was thrown from the vehicle, seriously injured and lost her unborn child.

Powers' blood alcohol level was 0.25 -- more than three times the legal limit.

She was sentenced to eight years in prison in Taylor's death, plus a credit for 25 days served followed by five years' probation, including random urinalysis and 200 hours of community service through MADD. She was ordered not to consume drugs or alcohol.

Powers also was sentenced to eight years in prison for killing Hampton's child and five years in prison for injuring Hampton. Those sentences will run concurrent to her first eight-year sentence.

Powers' license will also be permanently revoked.

She has 30 days to appeal the sentence.
