Suspect arrested in Palatka murder

31-year-old man found dead of gunshot wounds early Saturday morning

PALATKA, Fla. – A man was found dead inside of his home off North 10th Street near Reid Street in Palatka early Saturday morning, according to Palatka police.

Rory Hayward, 31, was found dead in his home with multiple gunshot wounds by officers investigating a call of shots fired at 4:30 a.m., police said.

Witnesses were able to provide officers with the suspect's name and vehicle information, police said. The suspect was quickly identified as Antonio Jenkins, 34, from Jacksonville.

The Palatka Police Department said they sent out an advisory to surrounding counties to be on the lookout for Jenkins and he was found in Green Cove Springs by Clay County sheriff's Office.

Jenkins was charged with first-degree murder and armed burglary of an occupied dwelling, according to police. He is being held without bond and will make his first appearance in a Clay County court Sunday, Police said.

Police said the motive for the killing is unknown.

Jenkins was arrested for battery in Jacksonville back in June of 2014, according to police.
