St. Augustine police identify man, woman killed by train

Investigators don't know why two were sitting on FEC tracks

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The man and a woman who were struck and killed Thursday evening by an oncoming train were had been in a homeless camp nearby, according to St. Augustine police.

Authorities said Anthony Ortagus, 37, and Misty Renee Onbowenby, 42, died when they were struck by the Florida East Coast train just after 4 p.m. at the crossing at Gabriel Street, just off U.S. 1. That's five blocks south of State Road 16.

Investigators are still trying to find out why the two were sitting on the tracks at the time. Police said the engineer hit the train's horn, but the people did not react.

The FEC train remained on the tracks for about three hours during the investigation.

In January, on Timuquana Road just off Roosevelt Boulevard in Jacksonville, 23-year-old Joshua McCoy died after an Amtrak train struck his Chevrolet Tahoe while it was stopped on the tracks. Last year there were two other deaths involving trains.
