Man shot, found dead in Ortega Farms apartment

Jacksonville homicide detectives say homicide

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man’s body was found early Saturday morning inside a unit at the Mission Springs Apartments on Catoma Street, between Timuquana Road and Ortega Farms Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Homicide Sgt. Robert John said the man was shot. Detectives have not identified him and aren't sure if he lived at the apartment where his body was found.

Police questioned the other people that were inside the apartment when they arrived at about 2:15 a.m. 

Cleon Dunn, who has lived at the complex for about a year, said he’s a night owl and didn’t hear anything other than someone driving through playing loud music, Dunn says things have been peaceful since he’s lived here.

"I’m comfortable with my child being here, you know what I’m saying?" Dunn said. "It’s pretty much quiet and this is news to me. I was just shocked to hear that just now.”

Melissa Cunningham said she was staying the night with a friend at the apartment and had a rude awakening. 

“Just police and detectives everywhere," Cunningham said. "It’s a quiet neighborhood back there. (I) didn’t expect anything like that.”

Police ask anyone who saw or heard anything at the overnight were asked to call CrimeStoppers at 866-458-TIPS.
