The shooting took place near the intersection of West 23rd and Division street. Police said a midsize grey sedan drove by Spells, and one of the occupants shot him in the side. JSO said there were multiple shots fired by unknown shooters.

Neighbors in the area, who were in town visiting family, said they were not surprised by the violence.

"They said a long time ago it takes a village to raise a family. I think we've gotten away from core values,"  Johnny White said. "Guns are not the answer."

White said it's just too easy to access guns.

"The way our society is going, we can't afford to continue this route," White said.

Anyone with any information on the shooting or shooters is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
