ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – If you live in St. Johns County this week is "last call" for storm debris pickup after Hurricane Matthew. It’s been a month since Hurricane Matthew ripped through parts of the county.
Cleanup began Oct. 7. Since then, almost 1,500 truckloads of storm debris have been picked up. The special priority pick up comes to an end this week.
Here are some guidelines:
- Place debris curbside: Place debris, un-bagged, out of the right-of-way, but within 15 feet of the curb.
- Don’t block access: Parking in front of debris piles prevents access by removal equipment.
- Separate debris: Make separate piles for vegetative debris, construction and demolition debris, discarded household furniture, and appliances. County officials are asking that you have debris in separate piles of tree limbs, moss, leaves and roof shingles. Broken windows and anything fragile should be in another pile.
- No HAZMAT: Do not place any hazard materials curbside, including chemicals, paint, propane and pesticides.
- No NEW construction debris: Debris from new construction is to be removed by contractors performing work.
"Once we go back to our normal collection route we have certain days we pick up yard debris. They can call 825-1049 if they have any other circumstances, and we can work with the resident," St Augustine public works deputy director Todd Grant said.
