2 men shot outside Northwest Jacksonville home

Both victims in critical condition at UF Health

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Residents who live near where two men were shot early Monday morning say it's not unusual to hear gunfire in the neighborhood. Police haven't released details other saying one victim was shot multiple times and both have life-threatening injuries.

Police responding to Mattox Avenue near New Kings Road and Moncrief Road around 3 a.m. found one victim, and a second man was picked up just over a mile away from the scene taken to UF Health Jacksonville. Both men were in critical condition.

"This is one scene, but two different locations that the victims were transported from. One was transported by JFRD, one was by a citizen who saw the victim and picked him up," said JSO Sgt. Craig Waldrup.

Police said did not appear to be any witnesses.

"We're just knocking on doors, interviewing people to see if they know or heard anything," said Waldrup.

Kelvin Williams, a relative of one of the victims, said he was shocked by what happened.

"I heard the shots last night. They said somebody got shot, and to find out it's my little cousin," relative Kelvin Williams said. "Devastating. My cousin, she buried her father over the weekend."

Williams said he's worried about his cousin's son and the other young man, whom he describes as typical teens.

Neighbors are trying to help the family. Deborah Moore lives across the street and is helping with the family's small children while everyone else is at the hospital.

"They're doing fine," Moore said. "I fed them something to eat, told them to watch TV."

Moore doesn't know a lot personally about the family, other than they've been going through a lot lately.

"I don't know. They just -- my neighbor just lost her dad," Moore said. "I don't know her personal -- I'm a person that stays to myself."

Neighbor Donald Patterson said the area is usually quiet, but then in almost the same breath said it's not unusual to hear gunfire.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
