70-year-old driver killed after hitting tree in Fairfax

Police said it is possible the man suffered a medical episode

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 70-year-old man died after striking a tree near San Juan Avenue in the Fairfax neighborhood Friday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the man was driving southbound on Herschel Street, approaching San Juan Avenue, when for unknown reasons, he sideswiped another car and continued off the road until he struck a tree.

According to police, the driver and passenger were transported to a local hospital. The driver was later pronounced dead.

JSO said it appears the driver may have suffered some sort of medical episode, ultimately causing the crash.

Herschel Street is closed between San Juan and Palmer Terrace, police said.

This marks the 11th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
