JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 64-year-old woman remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after police said she was shot late Friday night while lying in her bed.
Faye Norman was shot in her home on Stonemont Street in the Spring Park area. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is looking for the shooter.
According to the police report, Norman's husband, who was up watching television, heard the shots and then his wife scream from the bedroom. Police said several shots were fired into the home and that Norman was hit at least once.
Norman's husband, Carl Norman, told News4Jax that one of the bullets hit his wife's pillow, barely missing her head while she was watching TV. He said she was shot five times: twice in the torso, twice in the chest and once in her arm.
“If you're lying down in your bed and someone comes from the outside blasting in your home, where it is supposed to be safe, that is nothing but a coward,” Carl Norman said.
Police said several shell casings were found in the street outside the house. Detectives have not released a motive for the shooting.
Faye Norman's brother said when he got to the hospital around 6:30 a.m. Sunday that she was in pretty bad shape and was unresponsive. He said she's gone through a few surgeries so far.
"My family is up at the hospital right now supporting her and praying -- hoping she pulls through," the brother said. "What I gather from what they are saying is something happened at the school that one of her grandchildren was attending and it was some little gang stuff going on."
Faye Norman has six children and more than a dozen grandchildren. They've already traveled from across the state to be at her side.
“We are very strong-willed in our faith, so we believe everything happens for a reason, so I can't be angry, can't be mad,” Faye's grandson Lavaris Nelson said. “The only thing that we can ask is that everyone allows the police to do their job and hopefully get the perpetrators off the streets very quickly.”
Carl Norman asked for prayers for Faye's recovery and that the shooter will be caught.
“I don't know who fired the shots,” Carl said. “I would like to know who fired the shots and that it could be brought to justice.”
Norman said he didn't hear a car speed away, so he believes the shooter or shooters ran away.
Police are asking for your help narrowing down a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
