After aspiring rapper killed in Southside Estates, his family walks area with sheriff

Family of Maurice Hobbs Jr. continues search for justice

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams on Monday walked Agave Road in the Southside Estates neighborhood with the family of an up-and-coming rapper who was killed on the same road in January. 

As Williams his officers hit the streets for the Crime Prevention Walk, the family members of Maurice Hobbs Jr. passed out flyers with his face on them in hopes of finding someone who knows who killed him.

"(We're trying) to get the word out that we're still standing. You took my son. You took half of me. But I'm still standing and my family is still standing. We will get justice," said LaTasha Hobbs, the mother of Maurice. "I have to forgive you because God tells me to, but I will not forget what you took from my family."

On Jan. 26, just two days after celebrating his 18th birthday, Maurice was shot and killed on Agave Road near Cortez Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

"It was his dream to make it with his music and his dream was cut way too short," LaTasha Hobbs said.

Williams told News4Jax that detectives are working hard to bring justice to the Hobbs family and other who have yet to find closure. 

"I know that today is going to be a really hard obstacle for me to walk past the house where my brother fell. But I asked my brother today for some strength, like I always do. He sends me a heart in the clouds every day," said Kienna Hobbs, Maurice's sister.
