JACKSONVILLE, FLA – A woman shot a man early Wednesday morning in a home on the Westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. C. Jay Dyal said the shooting occurred about 6:45 a.m. on Barracuda Road after the two got in some kind of argument according to police and the woman shot the man in the chest.
The streets were reopened just before noon.
Individuals who are believed to be family members were seen coming back to the house where the shooting happened, but they did not wish to speak to News4Jax.
The full circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, but Dyal said the man was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and was in stable condition.
Neighbors were surprised to hear about the shooting on what they described as a quiet street. They said they have seen kids at this house so one of their first concern was for the kids.
“I was sleep and I turned on my side and I saw lights,” said one neighbor. “I got up walked to my window and I saw like six or seven cop cars.”
It wasn’t the wake-up call the neighbor, who didn’t want to reveal her identity, expected -- police cars and an ambulance outside the house across the street.
“We were like oh my goodness,” the neighbor said. “We have never had something like that happen.”
Police have not advised if children or anyone else was in the home when the shooting happened.
Emergency responders took the victim to UF Health with life threatening injuries and the woman was taken into custody for questioning, but it is still unknown if she would be charged.
News4Jax Crime and Safety Analyst Gil Smith said, “What they'll do is they'll interview both parties. Interview the man and the woman to see if their stories match up. Now if it seems like they were in some type of fight or battle in some way then she could be charged with aggravated battery.”
Smith continued, “Now if they are married or in some type of relationship it could be aggravated domestic battery.”
Whatever investigators determine, this neighbor hopes it’s something she never sees on this street again.
“Especially when I've got my nephew here,” the neighbor said. “I don't want nothing to happen to him he is my pride and joy, nor my sister and my mom.”
This is an ongoing investigation and the sheriff's office said they will release more information when it becomes available.
