JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 19-year-old man died after a shootout with his father that left both critically wounded Friday evening in East Arlington, according to Jacksonville police.
Police said they believe Xavier Lundy and his father shot at each other. The son later died. The father's current condition is unclear.
Officers were called about 7:20 p.m. to a home on Soaring Flight Way, where they said they found one person in the yard and another inside the home -- both in life-threatening condition.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots coming from the residence before police arrived.
"I was on my computer and I heard three -- what sounded like gunshots or somebody beating on something. I got up and walked into my backyard and I didn't see or hear anything else. And I went back and sat back down and heard some more shots or bangs," said Henry Coleman, who lives behind the house that police surrounded.
Residents described the chaotic scene Friday as officers swarmed the typically quiet East Arlington neighborhood.
"I saw police officers running through their yard to the back area, all around their house and we looked outside and the guy's, the police officer's, got a gun up to the house, pointing at the door," said a neighbor, who did not wish to be identified. "When the ambulance left and they were waiting for the other person to come out of the house, the other person came out on a stretcher, end up in the hospital."
Xavier Lundy was arrested in May on charges of resisting arrest and prowling. He pleaded guilty and was put under a mental health evaluation.
"He was always very polite, a very good kid, until just recently," the neighbor said.
Neighbors said Lundy's family was well-known and respected in the area. They said the outcome of Friday's night's shooting is tragic.
"We love the father, the mother, the family. Unfortunately, it ended up in a bad situation," the neighbor said.
Investigators said they believe the shooting Friday may have stemmed from an argument. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
