Woman wasn't shot in Walmart parking lot

Victim's girlfriend arrested, charged with aggravated battery

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 19-year-old woman who told police she was shot Sunday while walking through a Walmart parking lot on Beach Boulevard near Southside Boulevard later admitted that she was shot elsewhere by a girlfriend, News4Jax learned from police reports.

Officers were called to St. Vincent's Medical Center South at about 2 a.m. in reference to a gunshot victim. Officers met the woman, who told them she had been shot with a shotgun about 10 p.m. while outside the Walmart.

She told police she was taken by an unknown person to the hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

A follow-up report shows that she admitted that she was shot with a BB by her girlfriend, 19-year-old Kayla Leonard, after being held against her will during a domestic incident.

A search warrant was secured and executed for the residence. Police said they found several BB pistols in Leonard’s bedroom, with several bottles of BBs. They also found bloody items of clothing in the washing machine and cleaning supplies in the trash, the report said. BBs were located throughout the residence and there were several holes in the blinds and walls consistent with BB pellets.

The victim’s cat was also found and released to Jacksonville Animal Control.

Leonard was arrested and charged with domestic aggravated battery, false imprisonment of an adult and cruelty to animals.

Leonard was booked into the Duval County jail and held on $135,000 bond.
