Deryck Barcous sentenced to 5 years in federal prison

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man was sentenced Thursday for selling counterfeit Federal Reserve notes and for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Deryck Barcous, 27, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison, and in a companion case was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment for violating his federal supervised release.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Barcous was on federal supervised release for passing counterfeit Federal Reserve notes at the time he committed the new criminal offenses.

Barcous sold $3,640 in counterfeit currency on Oct. 20 to a confidential source working on behalf of law enforcement, according to court documents.

Barcous displayed a firearm during the transaction and offered to sell it to the confidential source, officials said.

Barcous sold the confidential source $5,600 in counterfeit currency and a loaded firearm and ammunition in a follow-up meeting two days later, the U.S. Attorney's Office. He was subsequently arrested.

A further investigation revealed Barcous had four prior felony convictions. The U.S. Attorney's Office said Barcous is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law as a convicted felon.
