JSO: Man shot in thumb near JU

JSO: Victim took gun from suspects, threw it when it discharged

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the details surrounding a shooting that occurred near Jacksonville University, early Tuesday morning.

Around 1 a.m. a man showed up at Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to his thumb, and spoke to police.

"He claimed that while he was walking home on University Boulevard, he was approached by five black males who brandished a firearm. He grabbed the firearm and the firearm discharged, striking him in the thumb," said Sergeant Wes Worbington.

Police said the victim claims took the firearm from the suspects, threw it and was able to get away.

Police said the victim was not a student at Jacksonville University.

The victim told police he did not know the men who appeared to be in their 20s.

No other suspect description was given.
