Many rebuilding altogether after Hurricane Matthew

While there is a lot of work left to do, the support is overwhelming

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Residents in Northeast Florida are still trying to get things cleared from their lawns after Hurricane Matthew, while others are rebuilding altogether.

It’s especially bad at Craig Shearer’s home.

“You can see the size of this one tree that went through the door and the house there. It was sticking up probably, I don’t know 30-40 feet up through the house, over it. And far beyond the other side,”
Shearer said.

They’ve been removed now and last week his home looked much different.

“It was a shock. I had some friends that emailed me some pictures of my house. I had a little bit of an idea what to expect. But you never really know until you see it. I know it was really gut wrenching when I pulled up into the driveway," Shearer said.

Shearer says a group of people from “Mormon Helping Hands” showed up and began digging his home out from the crushing weight of the trees. Shearer said the support is overwhelming.

"When you see something that drastic and that horrible and you know it’s going to cost, it would probably cost at least $12,000 to $15,000 to have it taken care of, and they just came in and did it with good hearts," Shearer said. "I’m on disability and I don’t have a lot of money and it was amazing knowing people are out there and have your back."
