Markeith Loyd combative during hearing for Orlando officer's death

Loyd interrupts judge, refuses to answer questions; Judge denies bond again

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man accused of shooting and killing an Orlando police officer was defiant again in court Friday when he appeared in front of a judge on new charges in Lt. Debra Clayton's death, WKMG reports.

Markeith Loyd, 41, is also accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, on Dec. 13. Police said he gunned Clayton down when she tried to apprehend him at an Orlando Walmart on Jan. 9.

The suspect's appearance on new charges, which include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, carjacking with a firearm, aggravated assault, and wearing a bulletproof vest while committing an offense in connection with Clayton's death, was in front of the same judge he saw Thursday. At the first hearing, he cursed at her.

This time around, Orange County Judge Jeanette Dejuras Bigney didn't allow time for any outbursts from Loyd.

After Loyd refused to confirm his identify, the judge said she remembered him from the day before.

When asked if he would like a public defender, instead of answering the question, Loyd repeatedly asked the judge her name.

“Please state your name for the record,” Loyd said to the judge.

Bigney denied his bond and ended the first appearance, less than two minutes after it began.

“Good luck to you Mr. Loyd,” she said.

Loyd's first court appearance Thursday was only related to charges in connection with Dixon's death. Orlando police officially filed five new charges against Loyd Thursday evening related to Clayton’s death.

Loyd yelled profanities at the judge Thursday and accused authorities of “making up” allegations against him.

Loyd refused to apply for a public defender and told the judge he would represent himself in court.

The judge denied Loyd's bond for his first-degree murder charges in Dixon’s death and ordered him not to make contact with any witnesses and victims.

It’s unclear whether Loyd will also face felony murder charges for Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis, who was fatally struck while on his motorcycle attempting to aid in the search for Loyd.

Police arrested Loyd on Tuesday night at an abandoned home in the Carver Shores neighborhood of Orlando, bringing a massive nine-day manhunt to an end.
