Memorial held for man killed in hit-and-run

Benjamin Kaush hit while riding bike on U.S. 1

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Family and friends of a man killed by a hit-and-run driver came together Saturday night to celebrate his life.

Benjamin Kaush was killed while riding his bike on U.S. 1 in January.

The memorial at Tabanera del Caballo on St. George Street included a silent auction to raise funds for Kaush's mother. Kaush was a musician, and bands that he used to play with performed during the memorial.

Even though Benjamin Kaush wasn't physically there, the room was filled with his memory.

One of Kaush's longtime friends said he'll be deeply missed by the community.

"He was well-liked and well-loved here. He had a footprint in the music and art scene," said Michael Rocha. "He wasn't just a nobody riding his bike."

Despite their grief, Kausch's loved ones remember him for who he was - a man who loved music. He played in three bands over the years. His passion for music was genuine and heartfelt, and that passion impacted the lives of those around him.

"He inspired me to write songs," said Rocha. "That's what we're playing tonight."

Vicki Laskoski-Domhoff, Kausch's aunt, still grieves over her nephews death.

"It's somebody's father, it's somebody's son. You know, he was my nephew. Everybody loved him, he had a great personality," Laskoski-Domhoff said.

Until she gets the answers she needs, she'll do all she can to keep her nephew's memory alive.

"He's missed. He was a very sweet boy," said Laskoski-Domhoff. "He'll always be in my heart."

The person who hit and killed Kaush still hasn't been caught.

Anyone with information that can help investigators is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol.
