NAS Jax neighbors: Don't worry, it's only a drill

Naval Air Station Jacksonville will conduct training exercise Jan. 19

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The U.S. Navy wants those living near Naval Air Station Jacksonville to be aware of a training exercise scheduled for Thursday.

The force protection training exercise will take place on NAS Jacksonville and is not in response to any specific threat. It's a regularly scheduled drill designed to sharpen the training and readiness of NAS Jacksonville security, fire and medical personnel.

Residents living nearby may hear the "Giant Voice" base communication system, as it will be active during the training to allow for immediate mass notification of exercise information. If you hear this or see unusual activity, there's nothing to be worried about.

NAS Jax personnel, housing residents, Naval Hospital Jacksonville beneficiaries and patrons of the NAS Jax Commissary and Navy Exchange stores should expect minor delays at all three gates during the exercise.

Throughout the training, Allegheny Road between Mayfield and Akron will be closed, with a detour along the posted route via Child and Biscayne Streets. The RV storage lot will also be closed.

No other information is being released for security reasons. The exercise is not open to the public.
