Police charge man in deadly domestic shooting

JSO: Ex-boyfriend shoots current boyfriend, tries to kill himself

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend before attempting to commit suicide has been charged with murder, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

Jarod Miller, 35, survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and has been charged with one count each of murder, armed burglary and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Miller is accused of killing 34-year-old Nicholas Hare at the home of his ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Varner.

Police said Miller and Varner were in a relationship for about nine years that ended more than three years ago, and about four months Varner began dating Hare.

Nicholas Hare was shot and killed on the Southside on Aug. 28

Varner told police that Miller continued to contact her after their relationship ended and that his attempts increased after he learned she was dating Hare.

Police said that on Aug. 28, Hare (pictured) and Varner were at her home when Miller came over unannounced, shot through the glass of a back door to get into the home and then shot and killed Hare before turning the gun on himself.

Varner fled the home and called police. Miller underwent surgery at UF Health and has survived, police said.

Hare's family says Miller should have been charged immediately no matter what his medical condition was.

"We were upset that it took so long for them to do anything about it, but we're glad that they finally done something they should have done to begin with," said Janice Pace, victim's aunt.

Miller is still in the hospital, under guard, and police said they believe he will survive to be prosecuted. They arrested him Wednesday and absentee booked him into Jail.
