Search continues for missing deaf woman in Mandarin

Woman, 46, last seen Feb. 6; police asking for surveillance video

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police continued their search Friday for a missing 46-year-old deaf woman from Mandarin.

Kerry Jones was last seen on Feb. 6 on Mandarin Road east of Loretto Road. Jones is legally deaf and wears hearing aids, but can talk and communicate. She's originally from Pell City, Alabama and recently moved to Jacksonville to be with her boyfriend, Jackie Kelly.

Jones was last seen almost two weeks ago at her home, where she lives with Kelly, 53.

Police searched the area around her home by helicopter and water Thursday. Police went door-to-door Friday and posted missing persons signs on doors in the area, asking anyone with information to come forward.

Police cars were patrolling the area Friday and Kelly's home was blocked off with crime scene tape. His truck was hauled away about 6:30 p.m.

Police also asked for surveillance video that might help them put together a timeline of where Jones went.
Charlie Revels lives across the street from where police are searching.

He said Mandarin Road is known as a quiet, serene part of the community and is very safe.

“(There are) pedestrians and runners every day, all day,” Revels said. “We rarely get anything like that happening in this area. This is a really nice area, and it was a shock to a lot of neighbors.”

The missing person's report said Jones left her home Feb. 6 after getting into a fight with Kelly over something he posted on Facebook. Kelly said Jones knocked him out, and when he woke up the next morning, she was gone.

Police said Kelly reported Jones missing on Feb. 9 when she didn't show up for work at Bealls.

Her car was found that day in the parking lot at Bealls on San Jose Boulevard. That area is just walking distance from the river.

The car is a tan 1996 Toyota Avalon with an Alabama tag. It has a brown right front fender and a rusted hood.

Surveillance video shows Jones’ car in the parking lot of Bealls around 6:45 p.m. the day after the fight.

About five minutes later, the video shows a person riding a bicycle away from the area of her car toward Orange Picker Road. Police said they aren’t sure if the bicyclist is involved.

The video shows her leaving work in the car about 2:30 p.m. the day she was last seen. The video didn't show when the car arrived back at the business.

“I was surprised that she’s been missing for a couple of weeks and that they are just now over here,” Revels said. “(I) just hope that they find her OK. That’s the most important thing.”

There's no word on how long police will continue the search. Right now, police say they don't suspect foul play -- but a friend told the Huffington Post that Jones wouldn't just walk away. They said she is a mother and grandmother, is family-oriented and wouldn't just not reach out to her loved ones.

Police are asking any businesses or homeowners in the area of Mandarin Road or San Jose Boulevard to look at surveillance video they have to see if they spot Jones’ car, a person riding a bike, or Kelly during the time frame when she went missing.

Anyone with information on Jones is asked to call police at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
