"Not only is it extremely rare for sea turtles to continue to nest into September," said Dr. Kimberly Andrews, GSTC research coordinator, "It's also rare for Jekyll Island, and even the state of Georgia, to have a green sea turtle nest at all."

The last time Jekyll Island saw a green sea turtle nest was in 2007, the same year the Georgia Sea Turtle Center opened its doors. This nest also breaks the record for latest nest on the island. Previously, this was set by a loggerhead nest laid on August 21, 2013.

The green sea turtle nest will likely be in the ground incubating into November.

The GSTC set up a Nest Tracker support page for Nest 160. A $40 donation supports the Research Department of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and helps with monitoring and research of Jekyll Island's sea turtle nests.
