Red Cross Providing Mass Care Services in North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The American Red Cross and community partners are feeding and sheltering hundreds of people following the devastation that Hurricane Matthew left behind.

As of Wednesday night, 41 people were housed in five shelters in Florida.

Within the North Florida Region, one shelter remains open for service in partnership with local relief agencies. It's located at: Solomon Calhoun Community Center, 1300 Duval St., W St. Augustine, FL.

In addition, 15 emergency response vehicles are supplying routes in St. Johns, Duval, Clay, Nassau and Putnam counties with items like water, ready-to-eat meals, shelter and kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies and comfort kits, insect repellant, gloves, masks, shovels, rakes, coolers and other needed items.

Twelve disaster assessment teams continue to cover North Florida coastal areas, with additional teams anticipated for interior areas.

To date for Hurricane Matthew, more than 26,000 individuals have registered in more than 125 American Red Cross, partner, and independently managed shelters, throughout the state of Florida.

The American Red Cross has served more than 103,500 meals and snacks in partnership with local vendors and partner relief agencies.

Help people affected by Hurricane Matthew in the U.S. by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word MATTHEW to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters.
