School remembers 16-year-old shot, killed after dice game

Ranod McKann killed at St. Nicholas apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A memorial was held Thursday for a teen who was shot and killed last Saturday.

Classmates of Ranod McKann attended a school-sponsored memorial service at New Life Cathedral Baptist Church.

Teens from The Church Houses Wisdom Academy gathered for to remember the 16-year-old who attended the private school a couple of years ago.

Those close to McKann were in shock when they learned he was killed over the weekend.

"It kind of scares me because I'm a year older, so basically if I walk out of the house, the same thing could happen to me," said Jaquia Jackson, one of McKann's former classmates.

Police found McKann shot Saturday morning at the Landon Imperial
Apartments in St. Nicholas, where he lived. McKann died at a hospital.

Witnesses told police a group was playing a dice game in the courtyard, and when it ended, two men approached McKann and demanded money. Police said they're not sure if the men took anything from McKann, but one of the men fired a weapon at the teen.

Students, teachers and leaders of the school and church were visibly upset about the death of their friend.

"Ranod was a super student, very outgoing very playish," said Bishop Terrance Calloway, McKann's pastor. "He was 100-percent boyish, great student and loved football."

"He was one of my guys," said Renee Jackson, who taught McKann. "I'm really going to miss him, really going to miss him. He was just awesome to me, he tried very hard to learn."

McKann's funeral will be held at the same church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Police are urging anyone with any information about his killing to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
