State attorney hires ex-Clay County sheriff for investigations

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – State Attorney Melissa Nelson has hired a former Clay County Sheriff to be an investigator and oversee special projects.

Nelson hired Scott Lancaster for the position of Executive Investigations and Special Projects, at a salary of $60,000 a year.

Lancaster was defeated in 2004 in his re-election bid by Rick Beseler. The defeat came on the heels of a scathing grand jury report that condemned Lancaster for using a county-issued credit card to make thousands of dollars in purchases for his own use, including alcoholic beverages, clothing and groceries.

The grand jury declined to indict Lancaster, though, and cleared him of 10 other allegations of misconduct.
