State Road 9B extension into St. Johns County begins

ST. JOHNS, Fla. – Construction is now underway on the third and final phase of State Road 9B from Interstate 95 to St. Johns Parkway in St. Johns County.

The final segment of SR 9B extends 2.3 miles from I-95 to County Road 2209 (St. Johns Parkway) and includes new intersections at Peyton Parkway (Race Track Road connector) and County Road 2209.

The new 1-mile Peyton Parkway connector road will provide direct access to and from Race Track Road to SR 9B. Due to the close proximity of the current SR 9B and I-95 interchange, and the distance between its ramps, an interchange at SR 9B and Race Track Road is not possible.

This project also includes construction of five retention ponds and bridges/overpasses at Race Track Road, Peyton Parkway, Durbin Creek and Russell Sampson Road.

Lane closures will occur on I-95 weeknights from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. with possible weekday detours allowed from midnight to 5 a.m. Nighttime detours are also possible on Russell Sampson and Race Track roads from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Lane closures are allowed on Russell Sampson Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., except on Wednesdays where no lane closures are allowed from 1-2:30 p.m. Lane closures are allowed on Race Track Road (east and west of Bartram Park Boulevard) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Speeding fines are doubled when workers are present, the Florida Department of Transportation said.

FDOT hired Superior Construction Company Southeast of Jacksonville to construct the $79.7 million SR 9B extension project. It is scheduled to be complete in summer 2018.

The first phase of State Road 9B, connecting I-295 to U.S. 1, began in 2010 and was completed in 2013. The second phase connecting U.S. 1 to I-95 began in April 2013 and is expected to be complete in summer 2016. For more details visit www.SR9B.com.
