Suspect dead after deputy-involved shooting

Woman says estranged husband forced himself into home, confronted deputies

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after a man was shot and killed by a St. Johns County deputy after forcing himself into a home Sunday night, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Just after 9 p.m. deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a home at the Cypress Trace subdivision, located at the end of Race Track Road just before U.S. 1.

A woman had called 911 and told dispatchers that her estranged husband, who did not live in the home, was attempting to forcibly gain entry according to deputies.

"One of our deputies approached the individual who was attempting to go through the front window of the residence," Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan said. "There was a confrontation between the two and the deputy did fire and the individual is now deceased at the front of this residence."

The identity of the suspect and the St. Johns County deputies involved have not been released.

Detectives with the sheriff's office and investigators with the State Attorney's Office continue to investigate the incident. Authorities expect to release the names of those involved and other details on Monday.
