Teen shot in gunfight behind Westside Captain D's

24-year-old accused in shooting ordered held on $650,000 bond

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The man accused of shooting a 16-year-old during an exchange of gunfire Friday afternoon was in court on Saturday. A judge set bond at $650,000 for Devraughne Owens, 24, on charges of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The shooting happened at the Captain D's restaurant on Edgewood Avenue North, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the incident began as a confrontation between two people who apparently knew each other around the corner on Andrew Boulevard. One chased the other to the restaurant and each fired shots.

The teenager was hit in the back. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville and police said the injury was not life-threatening.

Police said two supervisors from Captain D's chased the suspect, which police said help them locate him.

Police say the confrontation started in front of this church on Andrews Street.

According to police, witnesses said the 24-year old man chased the teenager down the street after arguing during a possible drug deal.

Police have not released the name of the victim, but a woman who identified herself as Owens' mother spoke to News4Jax.

"I just know the young kids tried to rob my son," said Sherilyn Owens.

Sherilyn Owens said she doesn't believe drugs were involved, nor is she aware if her son knew the 16-year-old. She does give a much different theory about what happened.

"He was on the phone with his baby mama," said Sherilyn Owens. "She heard everything that happened when the boy came to the car and said, 'Give me the money, where's the money?' My son tried to explain to him he didn't have any money. She said she heard him ask like two times."

Police are still working to find out exactly what led up to the shooting.

Devraughne Owens' next court date was set for March 23.
