Travel expected to rise for 4th of July weekend

AAA predicts most travelers for holiday since 2007, most will be on highways

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – More than 41 million Americans are expected to pack up and travel for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

That's the most travelers since 2007, according to AAA, which estimates that about 85 percent of those travelers are fueling up and hitting the road for their trips.

Traveler Sanford Stenson said he plans to drive his wife to Atlanta, and the low gas prices are a plus.

"(Gas) prices are rather low," Traveler Sanford Stenson said. "I remember when they were higher, so I'm just going to get on the road and enjoy."

The national average price for regular gas right now is $2.78, 88 cents less than the average price last year during Independence Day weekend.

"Gas prices have been declining again," AAA spokesman Bill Bishop said. "For about five months, motorists were a little leery to travel, because they were slowly inching up."

In Florida, the average price for gas is $2.69.

"I think the economy's getting better, and I think the people have more out-of-pocket money," traveler Eric Losey said.

Losey is flying to Boston and said it's a perfect time for a little vacation.

"Great way to get away and see some friends and family and celebrate the holiday," he said.

But Losey will feel the pinch. Airfare prices are up 6 percent, compared to last year.

Some tips for travelers this weekend: make sure to get your car inspected and have its oil changed before you hit the road.

If you're flying, be sure to arrive at the airport early, so you don't miss your flight.
