2 shot at Northwest Jacksonville nightclub

Jacksonville detectives haven't identified suspect in shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two people were rushed to the hospital after shots were fired at a Northwest Jacksonville nightclub overnight.

Police were called to LaVilla Sportsman Club on New Kings Road around 1:15 a.m. Sunday after a man and woman were both shot in the legs.

A few people in the area told News4Jax that they're not shocked that the shooting happened, but they are upset.

"It could have been worse," Keith Williams said. "Thank God it (wasn't)."

Williams, who does outside maintenance work for the club, said he's thankful he wasn't working overnight.

"Nothing like this has ever happened before," he said. "This is a community club, where everybody gets along with each other. But young people, you know."

"Luckily they weren't injured that bad, so that's a blessing," Charles Mitchell said.

Police are still trying to find out what led up to the shooting. They said information is scarce so far. According to a News4Jax count, this marks the third shooting at a nightclub this year.

A man was shot and killed last month in the parking lot of a Norwood Avenue strip mall just outside of a night lounge.

A month earlier, a 22-year-old man was shot and killed at the Silver Fox Lounge on West Beaver Street.

According to our records, there have nearly 20 shootings at Jacksonville nightclubs in the last 10 years. Most happened in the early-morning hours and in outside parking lots, but they're not limited to one part of town. They happened on the Northside, the Southside and the Westside.

"I just hope the people responsible be caught, that's all," Williams said.

Violent Crimes Task Force detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
