Unloaded gun found at Sadie Tillis Elementary

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A tip from a student Friday morning led officials to an unloaded gun at Sadie Tillis Elementary School, according to a Duval County Public Schools spokesman.

No evacuation or lockdown was needed at the Westside school as officials said there was never any danger to students.

School police confiscated the gun and arrested the student, whose age, gender and grade level were not released.

School officials said the incident remains under investigation and charges against the student's parents were likely.

Parents picking up their students at the end of the day were concerned about their children's safety.

"Your focus is on your child to be safe. That is first and foremost," said Larry Bates.

Once grandmother said she heard about the gun from coworkers.

"I think they should do a better security check, even with elementary students, because you never know nowadays," Pauline Clayton said. "We have a different generation today than what we had when I was in school. So they are a lot wiser than you are."

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said it was encouraging that the gun was reported by another student.

"That's always great and I think students understand that they're not going to be found out if they do report it. They will remain confidential and no one will ever know," Smith said. "That's the most important thing to tell your child, that if they do hear about a gun, or if it's just a rumor of someone having a gun, whether they see the gun or not, to let a teacher know so they can look into it. That's extremely important."

According to News4Jax records, this was the first gun found at a Duval County school since May.
