CONCORD, NC – A female veteran accused of taking advantage of parking in a veteran spot at a North Carolina shopping center is taking to social media for the rude note she received.

Rebecca Landis Hayes, who served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, parked in the veteran parking space Monday at the Coddle Creek Shopping Center in Concord. When she returned to her car and started driving home, she noticed a note on her windshield.

"This parking is for Veterans, lady. Learn to read and have some respect."

Hayes posted a photo of the note on her Facebook page with a response to the person who was not aware that she had every right to park there. She believes the person assumed she wasn't a veteran because she is female.

"I'm sorry that you can't see my eight years of service in the United States Navy. I'm sorry that your narrow misogynistic world view can't conceive of the fact that there are female Veterans. I'm sorry that I have to explain myself to people like you. Mostly, I'm sorry that we didn't get a chance to have this conversation face to face, and that you didn't have the integrity and intestinal fortitude to identify yourself, qualities the military emphasizes."

Hayes ended her Facebook post with a question for the person who left the note.

"Which leads to one question, I served, did you?"

Many Facebook users responded, thanking Hayes for her service.

"Very true words...Thank you for serving us...Shame on the person who wrote this note," Michelle Jordan Kennerly wrote.

"So very proud of your service to our country...nicely said," Jennifer Autrey Hess wrote.
