Video of deadly shooting released by Charlotte police

Photo released of pistol police say Keith Scott had on him when shot

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dashcam footage released by police shows the moments before and after Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed.

The patrol approaches the scene where an officer already has his weapon drawn on Scott. Moments later, another officer joins the first officer behind a truck.

An officer is heard yelling to Scott several times to "drop the gun" before Scott gets out of his car. While walking backward, Scott is shot several times by police officers.

The body cam video shows an officer running up to other officers, who are facing Scott. There is no audio for the first 25 seconds. The footage does not show the moment Scott was shot, but the video captures him on the ground afterward with other officers surrounding him.

At a press conference Saturday night, the family said even with this video, there are still many unanswered questions.

"We shouldn't have to humanize him in order for him to be treated fairly," said Ray Dotch, Keith Scott's brother-in-law. "What we know and what you should know about him is that he was an American citizen who deserved better."

Charlotte police also released a photo of a pistol it said Scott had on him when he was shot. The department also included photos of an ankle holster and what it said was a marijuana cigarette.

The family's attorney said there is no definitive evidence in the police videos that speaks to whether Scott had an object in his hand or acted aggressively toward police before they fired shots.

"Do those actions, do those precious seconds justify the shooting, that is the most important question that has to be answered," said Justin Bamberg, the family's attorney.
