Westside neighborhood shocked by woman's death

Police say Amber Bass was shot on driveway of Westside home about 3 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Family and friends of 22-year old Amber Bass shot and killed in her sister's driveway early Friday morning are anxious for the Sheriff's Office to make an arrest.

Police say she was coming to the home on Springtree Road -- near the intersection of Foreaker and Old Middleburg roads -- about 3 a.m. after a night out with friends when she was shot.

According to JSO, the woman's sister, heard a scream outside the home, and found Bass lying unresponsive in the driveway.

"We heard one big, loud bang, and I actually though it was a firecracker at first," said neighbor Aanisia Devine. "Someone started screaming, and I was just like, 'Oh my gosh.' I knew immediately something happened when I heard someone screaming."

Police said they were working to identify suspects and are urging people in the area to remain vigilant.

"There was no indication as to who may have done it, we're getting as much information as we can to move forward," Sgt T.K. Waters said. "We're not searching right now. We're gathering information so we can start a search as quickly as possible."

Devine said Bass (pictured, right) was like a daughter to her.  "We miss her already, and we're devastated."

The general manager of the Chili's restaurant in Fleming Island confirmed that Bass worked there and the staff was "absolutely devastated" by her death.

Neighbors say that there have been other instances of crime in the neighborhood recently, and they say weird things have been happening in a park that's directly across the street from where the shooting occurred.

The Sheriff's Office crimeview map says there have been two assaults, four burglaries and four car break-in in the area in the past six months.

Channel 4's Crime and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson, says people in the area need to be on high alert and have a game plan.

"If you're going home or you're coming in -- if someone is at the home -- you'll want to call them and have them expecting you," Jefferson said. "They should leave a porch light on or some spotlights on or something that can illuminate your car. Have them meet you at the door if at all possible."

Anyone with any information about Friday morning's shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
