7 Gators suspended for season opener against Michigan

Antonio Callaway among players suspended

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Seven Florida Gators football players were suspended for the season opener against Michigan, the school announced Sunday.

Among those suspended is wide receiver Antonio Callaway, the Gators most dangerous offensive player.

The other players who were suspended include: linebacker James Houston, offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort, defensive linemen Keivonnis Davis and Jordan Smith, offensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones, and linebacker Ventrell Miller.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement. "Action has been taken - they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

In May, Callaway was cited for a marijuana charge. He was suspended last spring amid sexual battery allegations. Callaway admitted to smoking marijuana in those court documents, although he was eventually cleared of the allegation by a Title IX investigation.

Florida kicks off its season Sept. 2 against Michigan at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in the first-ever regular season meeting between the two programs.
