58-year-old bicyclist struck, killed

Father of 2 struck as he was riding on Jones Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 58-year-old Westside man died Monday morning after his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Jones Road near Commonwealth Avenue, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

David Talley, who lived about two miles away, died almost immediately after the 7:21 a.m. accident. Talley's daughter and a friend said he was riding to work.

Talley's daughter, Dana, said he had two children and several grandchildren and had lived in the area his entire life.

"He was riding his bicycle, like he has for 8 to 10 years down this road," Chawn Stephens said.

Police said the pickup that struck Talley from behind was driven by a 24-year-old man. The driver's name was not released, but police said he stopped and was questioned, but not charged at the scene.

"At this time, we don't have a speed," Sgt. Donald Washington said. "We will be working on that, and to determine where the bike was in the road when he was hit."

"Everybody loved Dave. I don't think there's one person who didn't like Dave," Stephens said.

All lanes of Jones Road between Derby Acres Lane and Commonwealth Avenue were closed for part of the morning, and the southbound lanes reopened at 10:25 a.m.
