A 2-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and a 32-year-old woman from Spartanburg, South Carolina were injured in a crash involving a semitrailer on Interstate 95 in St. Augustine Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Neither of the children had on seat belts or were in child restraints, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The three-vehicle wreck was reported about 3:30 p.m., and all southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down just south of International Golf Parkway.
According to FHP, a Chrysler Town & County was traveling in the center lane when it swerved to the left. The driver of a Hyundai Elantra in the inside lane then swerved left, striking the guardrail and causing the car to go back into the road and hit the van, troopers said. The van then began to rotate across the lanes into the path of the semi. Trooper said the semi driver tried to brake but crashed into the side of the van, ejecting a passenger inside. The semi then overturned due to the impact of the crash.
St. Johns Fire Rescue said 2-year-old Camilo Guzman Godoy, 9-year-old Jeffrey Guzman Godoy and 32-year-old Lorrie Lozeau, who were in the van, were rushed to UF Health Jacksonville. One of the children was airlifted via Life Flight after she was critically injured, officials said.
The driver of the van, the driver of the Elantra and the driver of semi were not injured, troopers said.
Traffic was detoured off I-95 at International Golf Parkway to U.S. 1 and then back onto I-95 from County Road 210 until just before 6:15 p.m. when the lanes reopened.
Charges are pending investigation, FHP said.
The stretch of highway where the crash occurred is called the Bermuda Triangle of St. Johns County by some drivers.
The News4Jax I-TEAM investigated that portion of I-95 last year and found there were nine deadly crashes reported between April 2014 and April 2015.
The I-TEAM also discovered the stretch of I-95 in St. Johns County had the most fatal crashes in the region, totaling half of deadly crashes on the Northeast Florida stretch of I-95.
The Sheriff's Office continues to warn people to drive safely.
