Georgia counties plan ahead for tropical storm

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – As Tropical Storm Colin churns in the Gulf of Mexico toward the Florida coast, counties in the storm's projected path across North Florida and Southeast Georgia are preparing for heavy rainfall.

Tropical Storm Colin is expected to impact Glynn County with 4 to 6 inches of rain and possible sustained winds between 40 to 60 mph from late Monday through midday Tuesday, county officials said.

Glynn County Emergency Operations Center Director Jay Wiggins said Monday that his main concern is flooding.

Officials told him normally suspect areas during high tide, including Plantation, the Villages and St. Simons Island, will likely lose drainage and should be monitored for potential flooding.

Business owners in St. Simons Island were getting ahead of the storm and placing sandbags Monday.

Summer school programs canceled Tuesday

Due to the expected severe weather conditions, all summer school programs and related activities in the Glynn County School System will be canceled on Tuesday. Related activities would include all summer camps, Boys and Girls Clubs of Glynn programs and Summer Meal Programs.

If conditions permit, summer school and all related programs will resume on Wednesday.

Glynn County School System employees should report to work on Tuesday unless conditions prevent them from doing so safely, officials said.

Health departments to close for storm

Coastal Health District officials have decided to suspend operations early at health departments and public health facilities throughout the district on Monday because of Tropical Storm Colin.

Health departments and public health facilities in Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh counties closed at 2 p.m.

Health departments and public health facilities in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long closed at 3 p.m.

All health departments will resume regular operations at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
