ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Since collections began just days after Hurricane Matthew in devastated parts of St. Augustine on Oct. 7, more than 58,000 cubic yards of debris have been collected from city neighborhoods.
All total, more than 1,443 truckloads of vegetative debris, such as tree limbs and brush, construction debris, including discarded flooring and sheetrock, along with ruined furniture and inoperable appliances have been hauled away by the city’s Solid Waste Division and its hauling contractors.

The city, recognizing that there is still some debris remaining, has announced that all storm-related debris that residents wish to have collected must be curbside on Nov. 14. On that date, the city’s contractors will begin their final sweep through the city collecting all categories of debris caused by Hurricane Matthew.
The week of Nov. 14 will be the final week that hauling contractors will collect storm-related debris. After that, the city’s Solid Waste Division will return to its normal operations and will collect storm debris during normal scheduled collections, but not on a priority basis as it has been since the storm.
Residents are urged to use these remaining days to complete removal of storm debris from their homes and yards and place it curbside by Monday, Nov. 14.
Residents are reminded of several basis rules regarding debris collection that still apply in these final days:
- Place debris curbside: Place debris, un-bagged, out of the right-of-way, but within 15 feet of the curb.
- Don’t block access: Parking in front of debris piles prevents access by removal equipment.
- Separate debris: Make separate piles for vegetative debris, construction and demolition debris, discarded household furniture, and appliances.
- No HAZMAT: Do not place any hazard materials curbside, including chemicals, paint, propane and pesticides.
- No NEW construction debris: Debris from new construction is to be removed by contractors performing work.
