Tornado watch for parts of Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia

Weather damage reported in Lanier, Twiggs counties

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for portions of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia Friday night.
 
The counties included under the tornado watch in Florida are Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns.
 
The counties included under the tornado watch in Georgia are Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, Pierce and Ware.
 
The tornado watch will remain in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the NWS canceled a tornado warning for northwestern Ware County, but said a severe thunderstorm in the area continued to have the potential to drop large hail in Brantley, Charlton, Pierce, Ware and Wayne counties through 9 p.m.

The Clinch County Fire Department said a tornado Friday afternoon damaged at least one mobile home in neighboring Lanier County. No injuries were reported. There were pockets of tree damage in Clinch and Atkinson counties.

There was also a significant weather advisory issued for Northern Flagler, southeastern St. Johns and southeastern Putnam Counties until 6 p.m. As Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Pomona Park, moving east at 35 mph.  Hail up to nickel size and gusty winds of 45 to 55 mph can be expected, along with possible minor damage.  

The strong weather is due to a cold front is moving across Florida and Georgia that will trigger rain with embedded storms Friday night and Saturday.

The NWS confirmed that a tornado touched down in Twiggs County, Georgia, near Allentown, about 8:40 a.m. Friday. Meteorologist Steve Nelson says it's possible that another tornado later in the morning hit neighboring Wilkinson County, causing some damage to homes and trees. The weather service says it is still investigating.

In nearby Warner Robins, some streets were flooded and roofs damaged at Robins Air Force Base, and the airfield at Robins was temporarily closed.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
