$2.8M firehouse coming to Bartram Springs

Destroyed homes blamed on distance from fire station

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several homes in the Bartram Springs area have burned or been threatened by fire due to the fact there is not a fire station nearby.

Just a few days after Christmas, a fire broke out in Richard Grant's Bartram Springs home. He said it took firefighters about 15 minutes to arrive and his home was destroyed.
Grant's home was destroyed. Lee Helou also had a fire at his house.

"They did a good job putting it out quickly [but] I think the response time was the issue," Helou said.

To cut down on that response time, Jacksonville city leadership has allocated $2.8 million for a new fire station at U.S. 1 and Old Saint. Augustine Road. Neighbors are relieved.

"Having a family now that's definitely a major concern so it's definitely nice to know that they're building one a lot closer to us," Andy Tieben said.
