'Batman' arrested in string of armed robberies

Orange County Sheriff's Office to hold news conference

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County sheriff's officials on Monday said an arrest has been made in a string of armed robberies in which the culprit sometimes wore a Batman suit.

Deputies said eight armed commercial robberies occurred from January 22 to February 21 at businesses in east Orange County.

Details about the arrest will be released later Monday at a news conference.

"That's a lot," said Sgt. Craig Hall said late last week. "Eight businesses is a lot, it's not unheard of. But it's a lot so we're trying to get it to the point where it becomes unheard of."

According to the Sheriff's Office, the assailant typically entered a business while carrying a black or silver-and-black handgun and demands cash from the business and sometimes property from employees.

The culprit was described by authorities as a Hispanic man who speaks Spanish or has a strong accent. Deputies said the man is left-handed and wore a gray glove on his right hand in two robberies. He has also donned a Batman hooded sweatshirt/mask in two robberies, deputies said.

"It's not something we see on a regular basis. So I'm hoping that somebody has seen that, seen that individual wear that on a different occasion and that they might give us some help," Hall said.

Deputies said the robberies occurred at the following locations:

  • 7-Eleven at 8003 Lake UnderhillRoad on Jan. 22
  • Sherwin-Williams at 5937 E. Colonial Drive on Jan. 27
  • Mona Food Mart at 2835 S. Bumby Ave. on Jan. 29
  • 123 Dollar Food Store at 1502 N. Semoran Blvd. on Feb. 2
  • Dollar General at 911 S. Goldenrod Road on Feb. 2
  • Mi Viejo San Juan at 7229 E. Colonial Drive on Feb. 3
  • Dollar General at 6670 E. Colonial Drive on Feb. 14
  • Family Dollar at 7155 E. Colonial Drive on Feb. 21

No injuries were reported in the robberies.

A reward of up to $1,000 was offered for information leading to the man's arrest.
