2-year-old pulled from backyard pool at home day care

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 2-year-old boy pulled from a backyard pool at a home day care center on the Westside on Tuesday afternoon is in critical condition, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Rescuers called to Kiddie Heaven Daycare in the 8300 block of Ireland Drive about 2 p.m. performed CPR on Steven Spurlock before transporting him to Wolfson Children's Hospital.

The Florida Department of Children and Families told Channel 4 the center is not a licensed child care facility.

"We're very concerned about these unlicensed daycare facilities," said Department of Children and Families John Harrell. "Children have died in these unlicensed businesses in the past, right here in Jacksonville. What you have now with DCF is we're investigating to determine if anyone was watching the kids at all."

DCF is investigating how many other children were in the home when the child went into the pool. While Channel 4 was at the day care Tuesday, a number of parents showed up to pick up their children.

"Additionally, our child care licensing program is going to be looking into this as well," Harrell said. "If it turns out that this unlicensed business had more than one non-related child in that home, they are breaking the law. They could face fines."

DCF urges parents to only enroll their kids in licensed day care facilities.
