LISTEN: 911 call after shooting

The victims left the party after the fight in a Toyota truck and were pursued by two other vehicles, deputies said.

After being pursued for several miles, one of the pursuing vehicles discontinued, but the suspects continued to pursue, deputies said.

In Green Cove Springs, near the fairgrounds on State Road 16, the passenger of the suspect vehicle, Hygema, fired a 12-gauge shotgun, striking the rear of the victims' truck, deputies said.

As a result, one of the victims, James Smith, was struck behind his left ear with bullet fragments.

Bullets from the buckshot struck the rear tailgate of the truck and penetrated the rear window and front windshield, deputies said.

"We got run off from a party," someone who called 911 said. "They chased us off with bats, and they just shot out my back window and hit my friend."

"I don't know who shot us at this point, but he's bleeding," the caller said.

Only Smith was hurt, deputies said. They said he is expected to make a full recovery.
