When they arrived, they found a man, later identified as 37-year-old Danny Gibson, unresponsive in the road. He died at UF Health.

After the driver realized she struck someone, she quickly stopped along with several witnesses, according to JSO.

The driver is cooperating with the investigation. There's no preliminary indication of drugs or alcohol involved with that driver.

JSO is investigating the accident.

Police said pedestrians distracted by cellphones can be dangerous.

"Talking on a cellphone and walking as a pedestrian is no different than texting and driving," JSO spokesman Christian Hancock said.

He said people should be aware of their surroundings, especially crossing the street.

There are no laws against using a phone while crossing the street, but police said it's just common sense not to.
