Email is NOT from your post office

Customers warned not to open any email claiming to be from USPS

We have an important warning for you. Do NOT open any email claiming to be from the U.S. Postal Service. The email may contain a dangerous computer virus.

"Postal customers were receiving an email that says they had a package ready for pick up at the post office," explained U.S. Postal Inspector Tammy Mayle.

The email looks official with the United States Postal Service logo and a note saying, "Our courier couldn't make the delivery of parcel to you." It asked customers to click on the link below, which could be a dangerous move.

"Malware could be installed on your computer and they could see all personal information on your computer and gain access to anything you had on your computer," Mayle said.

It's important to note, the Postal Service said it doesn't use email to notify customers about a package delivery.

"Customers would receive notification via postcard that they needed to pick up a parcel, or it would be posted on the door," added Mayle.

Inspectors said always be wary of any email claiming to come from the Postal Service.

"The post office doesn't have the email address for every postal customer available," said Mayle.

Postal inspectors said the bogus emails often have a sense of urgency and claim if the package isn't picked up within 30 days, it will be returned to sender. If in doubt, though, just contact your local post office to find out if you do in fact have a package waiting for you.
