Energy-development high means gas-price low

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The cheapest price for gas in Jacksonville on Tuesday was $2.89 at several gas stations on Blanding Boulevard on the Westside.

"I'm amazed that there's such a big difference from one part of town to the other," driver Craig Shafer said.

The prices are the lowest in years.

"Right now energy development is at an all-time high in the United States, and it's allowing for an economic explosion of activity," said Florida Consumer Energy Alliance Executive Director Kevin Doyle. "And as long as policies are in place in the state and federal levels that continue to allow energy development to stay as it is without undue burdens and over-regulations, I think we have a period of great stable prices, which is great for everybody."

It means a lot more people are out and about.

"My daughter lives out in Georgia, and I just don't go, but this is great, takes about $70 to fill up my truck, and when you get to a point when you can only get $10-$20 at a time, you can't get very far," said driver Bradla Cook.

Doyle expects prices to stabilize through the winter, possibly even go down a little more because production is so high, which is great news for the economy.

"Because we're producing so much energy here domestically between us and our friends in Canada, it's able to allow us to keep more money here at home," Doyle said.

That's better for consumers, manufacturers and tourists to the Sunshine State because it means more money in everyone's pockets.
